Elevenmile Canyon: There are four campgrounds in Elevenmile Canyon: Riverside, Springer Gulch, Cove, and Spillway. Blue Mountain is located just outside the Canyon. Many of the sites are reservable Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Go to www.recreation.gov for reservation information, site descriptions, site maps, and availability. Trout fishing is very popular in the Canyon - the first six miles fishermen can use bait and keep four fish, the top three miles from Springer Gulch Campground to the Dam is Flies and Lures Only, Catch and Release. Rock Climbing is also very popular, with over 18 named climbs.
Camping Fees: All sites in Elevenmile Canyon, including Blue Mountain Campground are $16.00/day, and there is a $6.00 day-use fee to enter the Canyon (a one time charge while you are camping).
Getting There: Located 1 mile outside Lake George - look for the big brown direction sign (on the right) when you enter Lake George, turn left at the Bait Store and continue one mile making the first right onto County Road 96 (at the large wood map sign) and you are at the entrance to the Canyon. Elevations range from 8,000 feet to 8,500 feet.
Road Conditions: The Canyon road is open year round, during summer months it may be rough (wash board) and is maintained when there is enough moisture to grade. The road is narrow in spots, has three rock tunnels, and follows the river all the way to the top of the Canyon.
Please note: There is no access to 11 Mile State Park from the Canyon.
Jefferson Lake: There are three campgrounds at Jefferson Lake: Lodgepole, Aspen, and Jefferson Creek. Many of these sites are reservable Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Go to www.recreation.gov for reservation information, site descriptions, site maps, and availability. Motorized boating is currently prohibited on the Lake due to concerns about the spread of Zebra Mussels, however, kayaks and canoes, small sail boats and float tubes, as well as small boats with electric trolling motors that can be carried to the water are allowed. For hikers, the Colorado Trail intersects the Lake road and hikers can head off towards Kenosha Pass or Georgia Pass.
Camping Fees: All sites are $16.00/day, and there is a $6.00 day-use fee to enter Jefferson Lake Recreation Area (a one time charge while you are camping).
Getting There: Located about 3 miles north of Jefferson off Hwy 285 on the west side of Kenosha Pass- turn right at the large sign just across from the Jefferson Store, then turn right at County Rd. 37 and just about a half mile to the Entrance Station. Elevations from 9,900 ft to 10,760 ft.
Other Campgrounds off the Hwy 285 corridor (Fairplay/Jefferson Area):
Lost Park Campground: 21 miles SE of Jefferson via Hwy 285 and CR 56. Hiking, fishing, biking, horse riding, and 3 trailheads into the Lost Creek Wilderness Area. Camping is $14.00/day. There are 12 campsites with fire rings and tables, vault toilets, and water. Elev. 10,000 ft.
Selkirk: 8 miles N of Como via CRs 50 & 33. 15 campsites at $14.00/day fee each, toilets, tables, vault toilets, no drinking water, near hiking and Boreas Pass. Elevation 10,500 feet
Horseshoe and Fourmile: Just south outside Fairplay off Hwy 285, make a right on CR 18 go 7 miles to Horseshoe (19 campsites with fire rings, tables, water, vault toilets, $16.00/day fee, reservations taken) and 1 more mile to Fourmile (14 campsites with fire rings, tables, water, vault toilets, $16.00/day fee, no reservations). Both near fishing, hiking, motorcycle/OHV trails, and Mount Sherman. Elevation 10,600 ft.
Buffalo Springs: 12.5 miles S of Fairplay on Hwy 285, turn right at FDR 431 (about mile marker 170). 18 campsites, fire rings, tables, vault toilets, water, reservations taken, $16.00/day fee, near Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area, near Antero Reservoir for boating and fishing, as well as hiking and biking. Elevation 9,000 feet. Note: Some logging operations in the area for beetle kill trees.
Weston Pass: 15 miles SW of Fairplay off Hwy 285, turn right on CR 5 or CR 22. The campground has 14 campsites with fire rings, tables, vault toilets, water, no reservations, $15.00/day fee. Near Weston Pass, Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area, fishing and hiking. Elevation is 10,200 feet.
Michigan Creek Campground: four miles NW of Jefferson via Hwy 285 & CRs 35/54. This campground has 12 campsites, two of which are buddy sites. There are tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. DRINKING WATER and TRASH services are not available - Pack it in/Pack it out. Elevation is 10,000 ft. The campground is near fishing, hiking, and Georgia Pass. Maximum trailer length 25 ft. Camping fees are: Single sites $14.00/day & Buddy sites $20.00/day.
Kite Lake: 5.5 miles NW of Alma of Hwy 9, take a left at CR 8 in Alma. 5 campsites, tables, vault toilets, no water, $12.00/day camp fee, $3.00/day parking fee. Not recommended for trailers. Elevation is 12,000 feet. Climb 2 “Fourteeners” (Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Democrat) from the parking lot. Please be advised that Mt. Bross is no longer available for the public to climb.
Campgrounds Outside Lake George
Spruce Grove: 13 miles N of Lake George off Hwy 24, turn right on CR 77. 27 campsites, tables, fire rings, vault toilets, water, reservations taken, $16.00/day fee. (Reservations are taken for most sites.) Some sites are tent only walk-in. Maximum trailer length is 35 ft. Creek runs through the campground, fishing, hiking, and trails to the Lost Creek Wilderness Area. Elevation is 8,600 feet.
Twin Eagles Campground: 14.25 miles N of Lake George via Hwy 24, turn right at CR 77. 9 campsites, some walk-in, fire rings and tables, vault toilets, no water. $14,00/day camping fee. Limited parking available, please park horse trailers outside the campground. Near fishing, hiking, and the Lost Creek Wilderness Area. No reservations.
Happy Meadows: 2.75 miles N of Lake George via Hwy 24, turn right on CR 77 for a short distance, then right on FDR 112 (dirt road between two fenced pastures). 8 campsites including 2 Buddy sites, fire rings, tables, vault toilets, water, maximum trailer length 22 ft., right on the South Platte River. Single site fees are $16.00/day, buddy site fees are $21.00/day. Elevation is 7900 feet. Reservations are taken.
Round Mountain: 6.5 miles NW of Lake George via Hwy. 24 - you will be turning right off the highway. 16 campsites, fire rings, tables, vault toilets, water, reservations taken. Maximum trailer length is 35 ft. Elevation is 8,500 feet. Near hiking, biking, and fishing, ATV/Off road areas. Fees are $14.00/day. Trash services are not available - Pack it in, Pack it out.
The 2013 Annual Pass is available by mail or at the Entrance Stations at Elevenmile Canyon and Jefferson Lake during the regular season. Mail your check for $45 to: Canyon Enterprises, Inc. P.O. Box 324, Divide, CO 80814. The Annual Pass is valid for day use at Elevenmile Canyon, Jefferson Lake, Kite Lake Trailhead, and Manitou Lake, Rampart Reservoir, as well as Decker’s parking.
